We believe reading is the key to success and do all we can to ensure all of our children leave us with an ability to read and understand the written word. We are committed to the Dartford Project 'Every Child Leaves Primary School at Level 4 or above in Reading'.
Children begin learning to read by developing their phonics knowledge and skills based on Letters and Sounds. Through the multi-sensory approach of Jolly Phonics children rapidly learn to recognise sounds and blend them together to make words. We realise that some key words are learned more effectively through the use of flashcards - please see the list of key words below.
At school your child may experience a variety of reading experiences dependent on age and/or ability:
- individual reading with an adult
- guided reading in groups of the same ability
- independent reading
- paired reading (with another child)
It is vitally important that your child reads at home to an adult at least five times a week. Please offer this support making use of your child's Reading Record Record Book. Please ask your teacher if you need help supporting your child at home.
