Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) is a necessary part of all pupils’ education to help them to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life. Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) enables young people to learn about healthy relationships, their mental well-being and their understanding of their bodies.

Intent

At Stone St Mary’s Primary School, we believe in providing a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential, flourish, and celebrate their achievements and successes. As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we encourage mutual respect, responsibility, and foster self-esteem in a happy, caring, and safe environment. The teaching and learning of PSHE using the Jigsaw scheme supports and upholds this vision. Behaviour and attitude to learning are underpinned by values that are taught through PSHE lessons, making it integral to the success of the whole school.

Implementation

Our curriculum is split into five connecting stones:

  • Myself
  • Difference
  • Aspiration
  • Health
  • Relationships

The aims of PSHE education within Stone St Mary’s Primary School are to provide children with:

  • correct and relevant knowledge
  • opportunities to create personal understanding
  • opportunities to recognise emotions and find strategies to support these
  • opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights, and responsibilities
  • a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life

Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six puzzles (units), and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

We allocate weekly discreet PSHE lessons to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. Class teachers deliver the weekly lessons to their own classes.

These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways: assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system, Stone’s teaching and learning toolkit, through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school, outside agencies and by supporting charities.

In addition to the discrete learning, we also ensure that PSHE is taught through a cross curricular approach for example through discussions during our RE and History topics with a focus on celebrating difference and relationships, PE learning with a focus on keeping healthy and during science thinking about changes.

We aim to ‘live’ our school vision ‘Caring, Growing, Shining, Together’ and our ethos ‘treat others as you wish to be treated’ and apply these values to everyday situations in the school and wider community.

At Stone St Mary’s the PSHE program is reviewed and evaluated regularly to ensure provision is relevant, up-to-date and of the highest quality.

Impact

The Jigsaw and PSHE curriculum taught at Stone St Mary’s covers the diverse beliefs, values, and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. They help children to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, giving time for reflection and an opportunity to communicate their feelings. PSHE helps children to acquire British values and attitudes that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences within school and life itself, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and diversity and feel confident and informed as a modern British citizen.

PSHE and RSE in Each Stage

Children will learn to form positive relationships in a setting that supports mutual respect and understanding and that celebrates and acknowledges differences. With adults as guides and role models, your child will learn to develop anti-discriminatory attitudes. They will be encouraged to gain knowledge and understanding of their own culture and community to help them develop a sense of belonging and a strong self-image. Role play is used to help children explore their own culture and appreciate the similarities and differences in those of others. A positive self-image and high self-esteem will be encouraged to give children the confidence to make the most of opportunities, to communicate effectively and to explore the world around them. Children learn about different kinds of relationships. Being with the same adults and children regularly gives them the time and opportunity to develop relationships that promote social competence. Children are encouraged to think about and practise ways of solving problems to help them to feel capable of responding to challenges.

Our school, with the help of Jigsaw, nurtures our children to be confident and successful, increasing their capacity to learn and preparing them for the challenges of the modern world.  The carefully planned, broad and thorough PSHE programme allows our pupils to understand and respect who they are, to feel empowered and equipped for later learning in and out of the classroom. It takes a spiral approach, gradually revisiting topics at a deeper level at each key stage or year group, whilst rehearsing, emphasising, and embedding the essential skills and attributes young people need to manage their lives, both now and in the future. It provides pupils with a relevant, age appropriate and broad curriculum.

SEND Information

At Stone St Mary’s we ensure that SEND children are given the necessary support in class to fully access the PSHE/RSE curriculum and equal opportunities are given for all to be confident in approaching any problem within the world around them.

Learning is robustly and continuously monitored and assessed to ensure gaps in learning are addressed. Teachers and support staff offer adaptive teaching to enable access for all, and may provide scaffolds, pre-teaching, and other support and interventions.
